New Sustainability Literacy: Chemicals in Social Context

Sustainability Courses Simplified and Relatable

Sustainability Courses Simplified and Relatable

Sustainability Courses Simplified and Relatable

  • In a world shaped by the forces of nature, the expanse of urban landscapes, and the vast array of material culture, we build interdisciplinary learning journeys that enrich everyday life. We design these courses for inquisitive brains looking to pursue personal development outside the confines of university classrooms and mainstream media narratives. Our content helps illuminate the ecological relationships that link populations with their natural and built environments, while considering the tools and technologies that transform them.
  • We provide exposure to a moderate amount of technical terms for challenging situations, but our focus always remains on showcasing real-life scenarios that impact relatable everyday activities.
  • AFPI envisions a space where the halls of power do not dictate knowledge. Instead, we see science as a shared treasure, meant to benefit every creature, big and small, in our constantly changing environment.

Looking Through the Hydrocarbon Lens

Sustainability Courses Simplified and Relatable

  • In our journey to broaden sustainability literacy, the roles of hydrocarbons and organic chemistry have been pivotal in deciphering both the natural and engineered worlds, as well as our evolving material culture. We established a nexus between the microscopic details and the overarching structures of our political ecology during this quest. We learned that organic molecules, especially hydrocarbons, shed light on the molecular ties that underpin life and synthetic materials, while providing insight into the multifaceted dynamics of industrial and community ecology.
  • Positioning the New Sustainability Literacy around hydrocarbons and organic molecules allows us to anchor ourselves to Earth, remain rooted in biological life, and extend ourselves into the technological universe, all at the same time. It is important for everyone, especially non-specialists, to grasp how these molecules influence market trends, spark socio-economic tensions, and impact the reservoirs of other natural resources.
